A critique on the list of stretch assignments: All of the assigments listed are primarily characterized by increase in responsibility rather than increase in skill. It's a sore point with me!

My preferred kind of stretch assignment would be: "deliver a new Web site", "redesign the organization's hiring process", or "institute a knowledge management system for Program X." Specifically, nonprofit organizations seem not to provide challenges that (while they might well include management or project management and a great deal of responsibility) build tangible expertise and not just political clout.

I.e., I want the kind of tangible growth that I could use in my own life, use in ANY organization - nonprofit or for-profit, and use as a recognized non-managerial professional.
