Because Sometimes You Make a Difference: A Note From One of My Students

I wanted to share this note from one of my summer students as a great way to end the week! Earlier this week, I reflected on my first semester teaching at a university and some of my lessons learned. It’s been a significant stretch assignment for me – to be able to affirm myself enough to think that I could impart the kind of knowledge worth 3 credit hours. Whenever we embark on any new venture, it’s really tough not knowing whether all your preparation or hard work is going to make any difference. But sometimes, it does. And that is why we must, as young professionals, try out our ideas, knowing that some of them may fail. Today is one of those days I’ll reflect on when I don’t hit the ball out of the park. And I’m going to go ahead and put this into my non-existent tenure-track file :)

Professor Thurman,

Thank you for keeping me intrigued throughout the entire semester. There aren’t too many professors who can do that. I really enjoyed the class. You’ve inspired me to pursue my desire to teach, proving that young people can be great professors too!
