Wow, I can’t believe it’s been two years already! This week, Perspectives From the Pipeline celebrates its second birthday. I still remember the sense of anticipation and excitement I had when I published my very first blog post on April 18, 2007: Closing the Nonprofit Leadership Gap: What Have You Done Lately?
My first two years of blogging have been a part of my own personal leadership journey as well as a contribution to the field of nonprofit thought leadership overall. It has been an amazing time, and I want to thank each and every one of you for reading. I’m grateful for the opportunity to have learned so much from so many of you both online and offline. We’ve commiserated, shared valuable information and resources, and even disagreed with each other – all for the good of promoting open dialogue about how we do the work of social change better.
When I first launched this blog in 2007, there were only a handful of young people writing about next generation issues in the nonprofit sector. Now there are a few dozen. The voice of the next generation had been a mere whisper, now we are a force to be reckoned with both in the blogosphere and on Twitter. Today, next generation leadership is at the forefront of conversation at numerous nonprofit conferences and the philanthropic press such as The Chronicle of Philanthropy.
As I blow out the candles on my birthday cake, I really just want to say thank you for being here, and give you all a glimpse at where this blog is headed:
- I will continue to write about leadership as it relates to the next generation and people of color doing the work of social change.
- I will keep pushing dialogue about the need for more racial diversity in the nonprofit sector, including promoting leaders of color like this list of 20 Nonprofit & Philanthropy Blogs Written by People of Color
- I will continue to conduct original interviews with nonprofit leaders and liveblog at nonprofit conferences to increase access to knowledge about the sector.
- I will continue to share career advice, personal branding tips, and resources to help other young people build their own leadership skills.
As many of you know, I’ll be a full-time PhD student as of May 11 at Regent University’s School of Global Leadership and Entrepreneurship, and I hope to share my insights from my research about leadership here as well. I chose the program at Regent in part because the learning format allows me to stay in Washington, DC but also because the coursework will allow me the space not only to explore my own faith, but to examine how spirituality plays a part in leadership. I imagine you will certainly notice some of that reflected here on this blog. As for paid work, I’ll be keeping part-time hours working in DC in fundraising, leadership development, and teaching nonprofit management in Trinity University’s School of Professional Studies.
