American Express NGen Fellows Program Offers Scholarships for Independent Sector’s 2009 Conference

(announcement sent via email)

We hope the past six months have given you many opportunities to draw on your experiences in the inaugural NGen program, and we encourage you to join us for this year’s edition.  We expect another 150 young leaders to participate in NGen at the 2009 IS Annual Conference, held in partnership with the Council of Michigan Foundations, November 4-6 in Detroit.

The 2008 conference benefitted tremendously from the energy and diversity of the emerging leaders who came to Philadelphia, and we hope to build on that fantastic foundation. This year’s NGen: Moving Nonprofit Leaders from Next to Now program will offer new, targeted workshops and receptions, additional recognition of NGen involvement throughout the conference, and further exchange between current and emerging leaders. The IS website provides more information about the NGen schedule, including how to register for the conference.

We’re also excited to announce the American Express NGen Fellows Program, which will build the capacity of 12 young professionals to shape the future of the nonprofit community.  Recognizing that the leaders we need tomorrow are already poised to contribute today, Independent Sector will select a dozen emerging leaders at IS member organizations to participate in a specially designed set of offerings.

Fellows will participate in a series of exceptional opportunities. At the IS Annual Conference, to be held in Detroit November 4-6 in partnership with the Council of Michigan Foundations, fellows will receive complementary registration and lodging so they can take part in NGen workshops and contribute to conference-wide discussions.  Fellows will also engage in tailored online and in-person programming, have special opportunities for interaction with key people in the Independent Sector network, and participate in a six-month project that advances their leadership skills and engages emerging nonprofit and philanthropic leaders on sector-wide issues. To learn more about the fellows program and to apply, visit the IS website. Applications are due by August 14, 2009. Please submit an application, or nominate an outstanding young leader.

Applicants will be evaluated by a selection committee comprised of emerging and established leaders of IS member organizations. Those selected will be contacted during the second week of September to confirm their participation in the program. Please direct any questions to ngenfellows@independentsector.org

NGen fellows will be selected from a diverse and talented group of under-40 staff at IS member organizations. We hope you will consider applying – for those of you not currently eligible, we would be happy to share information about IS membership – and we look forward to seeing many of you at the IS Annual Conference again this year.

P.S.  Please also pass on this information to your colleagues, distribution lists, networks, and other interested parties.

Register for the 2009 IS Annual Conference, “Challenging Times, New Opportunities,” November 4 – 6, in Detroit.
