@Mary - I love that William Irwin Thompson quote. Reminds me of the two different mindsets we can take in this economic downturn - we can either be in crisis or opportunity mode.

@Kevin - Thank you, thank you for the Paine quote - “We have it in our power to begin the world over again.” Love this!

I read Thomas Paine - Common Sense, Rights of Man, Age of Reason, Agrarian Justice, the Crisis series - and I remind myself of my revolutionary birthright. I remember that today doesn't have to be like yesterday, and tomorrow needn't be anything like today. As Paine wrote, "We have it in our power to begin the world over again." There isn't a nonprofit leader out there who doesn't believe that in some measure.

1). I revisit favorite passages from Living in Balance, by Joel & Michelle Levey, including this quote from William Irwin Thompson:
"If you feel that you are living in a time of disintegration, your activities will be fearful and violent. If you feel that you are living in a time of reintegration and evolutionary emergence, your activities will be more open and filled with hope and wonder."

2). I personally reconnect with one or more friends in our Fieldstone Foundation Leadership Network, who inspire and re-energize me. Or, you might follow Rob Brezsny's advice to "Spread gossip about the unsung genius of people who don't get nearly enough credit for their good work." (Pronoia: How the Whole World is Conspiring to Shower You with Blessings, p.163)

3.)Walk outside in a favorite natural setting, enjoy a refreshing drink of water, breathe deeply, and remember: "Blessed are the flexible, for they shall not get bent out of shape." --anon.
