My experience with nonprofits is that the staff is always told that salaries must be low because 'we are nonprofit.' Yet the executive directors and top level management are paid generously because 'we have to compete with the private sector for these workers.' The truth is, that nonprofits (management) have to care about expenses like any other business and like any other business they generally view labor (other than themselves, of course) as an expense to be lowered.

There are certainly some compelling comments on this topic. Having worked in the non-profit world for many years, I can relate. I can't help but wonder if non-profits that are compensating their employees really should consider closing the doors. At the very least, it should be a wake up call to re-evaluate the business model and management. When employees themselves qualify for government benefits, or are forced to live in unsafe housing, one might ask, does the service provided by the organization outweigh the health and safety of their employees? And the bottom line is, how productive are employees that are worried about their own quality of life?
