I have to take issue with your last paragraph. The potential for disappointment with a nonprofit is as great as it is with parents, Wall Street, for-profits. I have worked with nonprofits that were mismanaged, treated employees with disrespect, or worked in opposition to their stated missions.

I'm over making the cut on whether something is a nonprofit or a for-profit or government. My criteria: do I care about the result? Is this organization functional or disorganized and a waste of people's time, money, and energy? Are my talents going to be used to their fullest? Will I be respected, as demonstrated through both compensation and the work environment?

I have worked for large, "evil corporations" where my particular job met all of the criteria - even the one about what cause that specific project serves. I have worked for nonprofits that failed my standards at every level.
