[Just ran into this post.] At my NPO, we've run into a related issue and now are learning to say "diversity in all its forms" instead of just the one word. (Because for our mission, diversity = race, AND class, gender, age, geography, and more.)

We've also found that we have to drive home the concept of true "inclusion" - actually respecting and seeking out the perpectives of "diverse" individuals, rather than just paying them lip service.

I stumbles upon your blog because of an article in the Chronicle of Philanthropy and must say this piece is right on target. At my current workplace, we are experiencing this problem because it's clear that diversity is lacking, but the word is limiting because everyone interprets and defines it differently. For example, I think it should mean Board leadership that represents the community in which we operate in. However, someone else might think it should be defined by skill set brought to the table so to speak.

Would it be to forward to share this article with a colleague since we had a past conversation about the topic?

Great to hear about the work you all are doing in Denver and I love the name of the project - I think it says what we're really trying to do and indicates that's it's more than just filling slots for people of color in our organizations. I'd be happy to feature a guest post from your organization about lessons you've learned so far!
