Thank you for your insights and raising the issue of non-profit boards. Boards can actually be a source of seemingly unproductive work (and stress) for the ED or strong collaborators and part of the team. Of course that requires a radically different mindset and was a challenge our board took up with surprising results, enough so that I referred to it as Xtreme Collaboration in a recent blogpost http://bit.ly/50fXWr. I just checked out your site and appreciate your work.

Thanks for sharing your experiences and creating interesting food for thought.

Re being lonely at the top in the nonprofit world I think of that being more a function of the relationship between the executive and the board rather than the distribution of work or responsibility amongst staff.

I've been president/coo in the private sector and subsequently ed/ceo of an international nonprofit and from my experience the nonprofit role was much more challenging and...well, lonely. Please don't get me wrong, I LOVED every minute of it but I felt much more isolated than I ever felt in the business world. More rewarding but also, at times, lonely.

Thanks again for the great post. I've shared this on Weekly Leaders Leading Ideas + News column. http://weeklyleader.net

Peter A.
I love hearing about great examples like that that other nonprofits could model. Your task force sounds like a great first step to shared leadership within your organization! Thanks for reading and sharing your experience.
