This Week in Texas: Motown, Migas and Making a Difference

Texas Nonprofit Summit - Register Today!

“I’ve always felt that as long as you are alive, you should be doing something that makes a difference . . . You don’t have to do big gigantic things. Just do things that incrementally make a difference.” – Barbara Jordan

It’s a beautiful morning in Austin, Texas. I’m having breakfast at Mi Madre’s: migas and Mexican coffee. The warm southern sun is streaming through the windows. They’ve got old school Motown music playing in the background. People say a lot of things about Texas, but every time I come here, I feel at home.

I’m in Texas for most of the week to speak at two conferences: the Texas Nonprofit Summit in Austin and the Texas Society of Association Executives (TSAE) New Ideas Annual Conference in Houston. I’m very much looking forward to meeting awesome nonprofit and association leaders. And, of course, eating as much good Tex-Mex food as I can!

I’m humbled and honored that Greenlights for Nonprofit Success invited me back to speak after being a presenter last year as well. My intention is to provide as much value as I can to those who attend my sessions in the hopes that they will be inspired to act and lead in a bigger, more meaningful way. Most of all, I wish to serve, as the first black Senator of Texas Barbara Jordan urged us to: by doing (and saying) something that makes a difference.

Today, the Texas Nonprofit Summit begins. You can follow the happenings on Twitter using the hashtag #txns. I’ll be presenting our signature workshop, “6 Ways to Rock Your Nonprofit Career” plus a book signing in two different tracks both this afternoon and tomorrow morning. You can follow the updates from just MY session on Twitter using the hashtag #txnscareer.

Wherever you are this week, I hope you’re serving and making a difference.  If you’d like to help the people of Central Texas who were affected by the recent, devastating wildfires, please visit the Austin Disaster Relief Network site to donate or make a pledge. Every little bit helps.
